Hurricane information
Hurricanes are storms which occur when the water temperature exceeds 26°c.
The hurricane season in the Caribbean starts at the beginning of June and finishes at the end of November. Accompanied by high wind speeds of up to 300 km/h, hurricanes bring torrential rainfall.
A storm is classed as a hurricane when wind speeds reach 118km/h. These are category 1 hurricanes in the Saffir Simpson scale. From wind speeds of 250 km/h the hurricane is a category 5.
Despite the high wind speeds hurricanes can only move between 10 and 30 km/h, sometimes even just staying in one place, which increases the amount of damage caused. Over land the force of the hurricane weakens, as it doesn’t have the energy of the warm water beneath it.
We observe satellite images from June to November. All customers of Aphrodite Travel will be informed by us if a hurricane develops where their hotel is located. All the hotels which we work with have emergency plans in place in the case of a hurricane. If you have any questions, we are always happy to help.
