Quintana Roo, Mexico, new environmental fee

Charged per room per night $28,86 Mexican pesos

On March 1, 2019, the Congress of the State of Quintana Roo passed a law that establishes a new "environmental fee". All guests, users of guest rooms and/or hotel rooms in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Cancún are affected.

The current fee for each municipality for the year 2022 has been increased. Charged now per room per night is $28.86 Mexican pesos, approximately USD $1.39. The government agencies of the respective municipalities have stated that the environmental fee is necessary to provide the municipality with sufficient funds to maintain, protection and maintenance of their beaches and all natural resources.

Many hotels cover this environmental fee for their guests or cap it at the room rate. Other large hotel chains such as Playa Hotels & Resorts charge the environmental fee to their guests upon arrival.
